😱 The Longest Fireman’s Carry of My Life [True Story]

Back in high school, I knew this girl.

She was in the same grade as me.

I really got along well with her family, especially her brother.

One day, her brother was hit by a car and broke his spine.

From that point on, he was in a wheelchair.

This was a time when there was no such thing as wheelchair accessibility—not like there is today in government buildings and public spaces.

I remember one day we decided to go to the CN Tower, which, for those who don’t know, was the tallest free-standing structure in the world at the time.

Comparison to other towers

Just getting into the building was a nightmare.

Getting down to the first elevator was another challenge.

But we managed to get up to the main observation area.

Back then, you had to climb a series of stairs to get to the upper observation deck.

And there was no way for him to get up on his own.

So, I did what I could—I put him in a fireman’s carry and hauled him up those stairs, about 120 feet, so he could see the view from the next level.

It was brutal but it was the only way.

Back then, though, there was no help for people in wheelchairs.

These days, things are moving in a better direction.

It just shows how much things can change over time—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
