Back in my photography days, I got a gig working with the Toronto Zoo to take some pictures of the animals.
I was using this high-end Hasselblad camera.
It was an amazing piece of equipment, but it led to a bit of a situation.
The Hasselblad is a big, black box, probably around four by four inches.
My usual camera was a standard 35mm with a more traditional look, so I set that aside and used the Hasselblad for the day.
One of the trainers asked if I wanted to watch a red-tailed hawk that theyād just released.
It had been nurtured back to health after an injuryāone of its wings had been broken.
This was going to be its first flight since the recovery.
The hawk flew out about a hundred yards, maybe more, and perched on the top of a tree.
It looked great, strong and healthy.
Then the trainer said, āIāll get him to fly right over your camera for a great shot.ā
So I got set up, ready for the perfect moment.
The hawk started flying toward me, talons out.
All of a sudden, it mistook my camera for preyāmaybe a pigeon or somethingāand attacked it.
It flipped over, dug its talons into my shirt and scratched down my back.
My shirt was completely ripped open.
I was lucky itās talons didnāt do more damage.
If I hadnāt been using that camera, none of that wouldāve happened.
Itās a reminder to always be happy with what you got.
