Back in the late ā€™80s, I was living in Toronto, studying film, and sharing an apartment with my old buddy Regan.

Yes, that same Regan from two weeks ago.

Now, Regan and I werenā€™t exactly angelsā€¦

One night, we decided to pull a prank on our neighbors - just to see how theyā€™d react.

We staged a full-blown, over-the-top fight.

Voices raised, stuff being thrown around (or at least sounded like it), and right at the peak, I dropped to the floor and bit into a blood capsule weā€™d picked up from a film effects shop.

It looked like a crime scene.

Blood down the face.

Dead silent.

Regan ran to grab the neighbors.

I could hear them coming down the hall, whispering...

They walk in, see me lying there, and Regan hits them with, ā€œWhat do we do?ā€

Without skipping a beat, one of them says: ā€œWe need to figure out how to get rid of the body.ā€

Not, ā€œCall an ambulance.ā€

Not, ā€œIs he breathing?ā€

Nope.

Just straight to disposal of the body.

I opened one eye, looked up, and said, ā€œWhat do you mean, ā€˜get rid of the bodyā€™!?!?ā€

We all burst out laughing.

Regan and I were in tears.

The business lesson:

Sometimes people react in ways you donā€™t expect - and sometimes they go completely off-script.

Whether itā€™s a negotiation, a client call, or a product launch, you canā€™t predict everything.

So plan ahead.

Have a backup.

And be ready to improvise.

Over the past few weeks, things have escalated - fast. And based on how many of you told me your wanted more updates on these tariffs, I figured I share what happened this week.

Hereā€™s everything that happenedā€¦

šŸ“† April 9, 2025 ā€” Tariffs on Chinese Imports Jump to 145%
The U.S. officially increased tariffs on nearly all Chinese imports, bringing the effective rate to a staggering 145%. Thatā€™s up from previous 10ā€“25% tiers.

šŸ“† April 11, 2025 ā€” China Retaliates with 125% Tariff on U.S. Goods
China didnā€™t waste any time. Two days later, they imposed their own 125% tariff on U.S. goods.

šŸ“† April 11, 2025 ā€” Rare Earth Export Ban
China also pulled the plug on rare-earth metal and magnet exports, which are critical to tech, EVs, and defense.

šŸ“† April 12, 2025 ā€” Temporary Exemptions for Electronics Announced
In a bit of relief, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced temporary exemptions for:

  • Smartphones

  • Computers

  • Semiconductor equipment

Instead of facing 145%, these items now fall under a 20% ā€œFentanyl Tariffā€ classification.

šŸ•’ 90-Day Tariff Pause for Most Countries (Excluding China)
Also on April 14, the U.S. announced a 90-day pause on proposed tariff hikes for most countriesā€”but not China.

šŸ”® Whatā€™s Coming Next: New Semiconductor Tariffs?!
Despite the temporary relief, the administration made it clear that more tariffs are coming, especially on semiconductors and high-tech components.

Expected timeline: late May to early June 2025.

šŸ¤Æ AMAZON CANCELS MASSIVE INVENTORY ORDER FROM CHINA!

So hereā€™s something that caught my eye this week and if youā€™re in the Amazon space, especially sourcing from Asia, this oneā€™s worth paying attention to.

According to a document reviewed by Bloomberg, Amazon just pulled the plug on a massive inventory order from China and parts of Southeast Asia.

Some vendors are now sitting on a mountain of unsold goods, scrambling to figure out what to do next.

Orders from Vietnam and Thailand got the axe too.

No official statement from Amazon yet, but they did confirm that a ā€œsignificant portionā€ of their components and finished goods still come from China.

Now, hereā€™s where it gets even more interesting...

This all happened right before Trump announced heā€™d jack up tariffs on Chinese products to 125%.

Trump did announced a short-term tariff pause, which gave the markets a little breather after a rough week.

So whatā€™s the takeaway here for sellers like us?

Amazonā€™s not in the habit of canceling massive orders without good reason.

When the big players start shifting, it usually means storm clouds are on the horizon.

  1. Set Up Your TikTok Account in the U.S.ā€”Manually ā€“ Do not outsource TikTok account creation to VAs in other countries. If your account is created or managed outside the U.S., it becomes geo-locked and your audience will be misaligned. Use a VPN if necessary, but the account must be U.S.-based.
